Consulting Services
Strong, respectful, and authentic community engagement is the foundation of meaningful change. With experience in working alongside diverse communities and organisations and leading consumer engagement strategy and development, I offer consulting services to support organisations to connect with, listen to, and embed the voices of consumers and communities in their work.
Consumer & community engagement strategy
An engagement strategy should provide an organisation with a clear framework on how they partner with community. It sets out the “why” behind engagement - why it matters, why it should be embedded in decision-making, and why it strengthens trust, inclusion, and outcomes.
I support organisations to focus on action; not leaving you with a document that may look good, but doesn’t actually help put engagement into practice. Developing a strategy includes working with staff, leadership teams, consumers & community leaders to understand current problems or wins; regardless of what ‘stage’ or level of experience the organisation has in consumer and community engagement.
At the end of the consulting process, the organisation will have an engagement strategy unique to them, and one that brings confidence and clarity. All teams should feel on the same page, have insight into what they bring and how they contribute. By removing uncertainty and jargon, the strategy makes engagement approachable, practical, and meaningful — helping people feel equipped and confident to put it into action no matter their role at the organisation.
Facilitation of engagement activities
Alongside strategy development, I also support organisations with the facilitation of engagement activities. This can include advising on the most suitable methods — such as focus groups, workshops, surveys, interviews, or advisory panels — as well as the methodologies that guide them, such as co-design or deliberative engagement.
Engagement activities include:
Focus groups
1:1 or small-group interviews
Collaborative workshops and forums
Working groups (for program & service design, implementation or evaluation)
Digital storytelling
Reviewing and auditing consumer representation
By spending time with an organisation and the communities they work with, I provide organisations with a comprehensive review and report on their current approaches to recruiting, onboarding, and supporting consumer and community representatives, leaders, or advocates. Current strengths and areas for improvement will be documented along with guidance for on-going review and formal evaluation.
The review may include:
Identifying capacity-building opportunities to better equip and empower consumer representatives.
Assessing duty of care to ensure representatives are supported, safe, and valued in their roles.
Practical steps towards recognising lived and living experience as genuine expertise.
Strengthening organisational culture to ensure dignity, respect, and authentic inclusion are central to engagement practice.
This aspect of consulting can help organisations to move beyond tokenistic approaches, creating structures that genuinely value and support consumer and community engagement.
Consultancy approach
I take a structured & open-minded approach to community engagement, drawing on established frameworks that guide participation, levels of engagement, and the most suitable methodologies for each context. My focus is always on creating safe, welcoming, and genuinely engaging spaces — combining creativity and innovation with careful attention to detail. This means balancing “big picture” ideas with the practical steps needed to ensure everything runs smoothly and avoids small oversights that could have larger consequences, long term, such as risking community trust.
My style is approachable and grounded: not about jargon or buzzwords that tend to confuse or overcomplicate the situation! I like to develop clear strategies that balance realistic goals with aspirational goals. When a project is finished, you won’t see me in focus; my role is intentionally in the background to guide the process so that the real focus is on the voices, stories, and outcomes that matter most — the community’s.
My professional experiences in engagement include:
Developing peer-led programs that focus on mutual aid model, lived and living experience leadership and expertise
Designing consumer partnering training modules and resources - for community and professionals within the health sector
Facilitating engagements across the entire spectrum of the IAP2 public participation spectrum
Subject areas including digital health, women’s health services, public health promotion initiatives, advocacy campaigns, rural and remote health access and much more.
